Members of the Van Kam Freightways Service Center in Prince George, BC, recently volunteered their time to assist the United Way of Northern BC (UWNBC) in decorating their 50ft ‘Tree of Lights.’ As a long-standing holiday tradition in the city, this annual campaign aims to bring community partners together for a united cause. The tree was hoisted on November 12th atop the Coast Prince George Hotel in downtown Prince George.

Spreading the Joy

This year’s theme is ‘joy’ as the UWNBC aspires to offer lights of hope & joy to offset the various hardships this province has been through with the pandemic, wildfires, and recent floods & mudslides. Funds raised this season will go toward mental health facilities within the city. “We are so thrilled to be able to bring the Tree of Lights back to Prince George once again this year! Our vision for this year’s campaign is ‘joy’ in all its ways and connecting the community together to make a truly meaningful impact in this amazing place we call home,” said Trista Spencer, Executive Director, UWNBC.

Representing Van Kam for decorating the tree were Tim Rebinsky (Regional Manager – Northern BC) and Pete Korotash (Business Development Manager – Northern BC). When Lorna Bihori (UWNBC Resource Development Officer) reached out to them to help put up lights on the tree, both gentlemen were delighted to offer their time and services. “I’ve been in Northern BC communities since 1993, and I knew how important the ‘Tree of Lights’ was to the community of Prince George. Tim has lived in PG his whole life, and he too was thrilled about the invite to volunteer,” stated Pete when asked about their involvement.

Supporting Communities

Van Kam recognizes that it has a social responsibility to better the lives of its customers, employees and communities. “The entire Van Kam management team was on board from the moment I mentioned this opportunity… there was no hesitation,” said Pete about Tim and him volunteering for the Tree of Lights campaign. “Our team takes great pride in our efforts to give back to the communities where we work and operate, and this event for the United Way was no different. The kindness runs deep throughout Van Kam as even our corporate head office in Surrey got involved with a supporting donation to be made in December!”
