Off the Clock, In the Community

Last quarter kept us busy off the clock, and between rides, runs, ballgames, and donations, our teams found plenty of reasons to get out into the community this quarter. Here’s a look at where Van Kam showed up.

Riding for the Guys

Men’s health got a lot of our attention this spring. In May, we sponsored two of our own drivers, Surrey’s Ken Thompson and Kelowna’s Doug Pollok, in The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. Both rode to raise funds for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health, and both finished near the top of the fundraising boards, with Doug placing 8th and Ken 12th in their respective rides.

Then, in June, for Men’s Health Month, we backed the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation and its Suspenders On campaign, which gets people talking about men’s health instead of skipping past it. In our line of work, that one hits close to home.

Going the Distance

Some of our team put in the miles, too. Six of our Surrey crew took on the Workout to Conquer Cancer challenge through May, logging walking, running, cycling, and gym time in support of the BC Cancer Foundation. By the end, they had racked up thousands of minutes of movement between them. Thanks to (left to right) Soce Adriatico, Harjinder Chahal, Debbie Finnegan, Marina Cabrera, Jennifer Clark, and Kathy Li for the effort.

We also supported Afrika Tikkun through Belron Canada’s Spirit of Belron Challenge, which marks 25 years of helping children and young people across South Africa through education, healthcare, nutrition, and family support. It was another way to back a cause with long-term impact.

For the Children

A few causes this quarter focused on kids and families. We supported BC Children’s Hospital Foundation through Mining for Miracles during BC Mining Month, in May, helping families across the province get care when they need it most. We also took part in the Hospital Activity Book again, the colouring book that puts something fun in the hands of kids spending time in the hospital. Our truck, “Stripes,” is in there, waiting for a paint job.

We sponsored Hope Air for another year. The Canadian charity provides free flights and travel support to patients who can’t afford the cost of travel to medical care. Since 1986, Hope Air has arranged over 200,000 travel arrangements for people across the country.

Closer to Home

For Easter, we supported Union Gospel Mission in providing hot meals across the community, with this year’s donation dedicated to Robert Henry Sr., whose years of commitment to the cause started the tradition for us. For Mother’s Day, we donated to YWCA BC, which supports single mothers and their families through housing and weekly support groups in Surrey, Langley, and beyond.

Backing the Local Teams

This year, we came on as an official partner of the Vancouver Canadians for their 2026 season. To kick it off, we took the crew out to The Nat for a game. The C’s pulled off a win and a home run, which made for a pretty good Saturday out. We also came on as a silver sponsor for the RMMSA Pride 2011B squad, and we’re backing MacKillican Motorsports as they head to the CDBA Gary Bergeron Memorial Summer Clash in July.

The Bigger Picture

That’s a lot of ground for one quarter. Different causes, different corners of the community, but the same idea behind all of it: show up, lend a hand, and back the people and places that make this part of the world what it is. More to come this quarter.
