Celebrating Mike Bush’s 30 Years of Service

October 30, 2024

This year, Mike Bush, a P&D Driver at our Prince George terminal, celebrates 30 years with Van Kam. From early morning freight loading to stepping up when the team needs him most. Mike’s dedication is unmatched. He’s known for his hard work, team spirit, and passion for lending a hand whenever needed. Mike’s journey truly reflects the core values that make Van Kam what it is today.

From Small Beginnings to a New Era

When Mike first joined Van Kam in 1994, our Prince George terminal was small, both in size and staff. “It was just a tiny building, and there were only a few of us,” he recalls. “We all knew each other, and everyone did a little bit of everything.” As a new hire, Mike quickly embraced this all-hands-on-deck mentality, doing whatever was needed—from loading and unloading freight to helping with linehaul.

Three decades later, our Prince George terminal has evolved significantly. The old building has been replaced by a modern facility with state-of-the-art equipment to improve efficiency and safety. “It’s not just a bigger space,” Mike says. “Our new terminal means we have better equipment, which makes the work safer and faster. It’s better for everyone.” The changes, he believes, reflect Van Kam’s commitment to constant improvement, both for our operations and our people. “I’ve watched it all grow over the years, and I’m proud to have been a part of it,” he adds.

Hooked on the Outdoors, Rooted on the Farm

Outside of work, Mike loves to unwind in the great outdoors. “I love hunting and fishing, even if I don’t get to do it as much as I’d like anymore,” he admits with a laugh. But when he does make the time, it’s usually spent Coho fishing in Kitimat or salmon fishing in Prince Rupert. “There’s nothing like being out there on the water. It’s calming, me and the fish,” he says.

Mike’s ties to nature don’t end at the water’s edge. For years, he worked alongside his family on their cattle farm. While they haven’t raised cattle in a long time, the land is still used for hay production, now leased to a neighbour.

Words of Wisdom for Newcomers

Reflecting on his 30 years at Van Kam, Mike offers straightforward advice for new employees: “Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty.” He believes that success at Van Kam comes from being adaptable, willing to learn, and helping others whenever possible. “If there’s work to be done, just do it. And don’t be shy about offering a hand to someone else,” he says. It’s an approach that’s served him well for three decades, making him a respected and valued team member.

Looking Back with Pride

At the end of the day, it’s the feeling of productivity that keeps Mike coming back. “I just like feeling useful,” he says. “There’s something about knowing you’ve done a good job and helped out your team,” he concludes. With 30 years of service under his belt, Mike Bush embodies the hard work, commitment, and team spirit that have defined Van Kam for over 77 years.

Here’s to three decades of dedication, Mike. Thank you for all you do, Mike. Here’s to many more productive days ahead!
